Starting From The Forest, He Made his Business in The World of Natural Honey
Hoopoekodaikanal.com is
an e-commerce website from where you can order organic products made of various
types of honey and wax. In 2015, Nishita Vasanth and
Priyarshi Mani got the idea that they should do honey business because of
buying more honey from tribals near the hills. With this idea, she started a
Kodaikanal based website on which she started selling and processing honey and
wax. Priyarshi says that she often wondered what could be done with so many
bees and honey, and keeping this in mind, she took steps. In the world of
cosmetics, she did not want to go because of competition. So Nishita and
Priyarshi decided that they would make products related to Biwax and do some
innovations. Keeping this in mind, he started making reusable and biodiggable wraps
from Beewax along with honey which were widely preferred due to being
eco-friendly.
Started business to help tribals
Talking back to her
early days, Nishita and Priyarshi reveal that she had originally moved to the
Palani Hills area while working with the Indian National Trust for Art and
Culture Heritage NGO based in Bangalore. While coming over a documentary film
over the Palani tribes there, he discovered that the tribals used to bring
honey from the dense forests with their traditional skills. During the filming,
the tribals were asked if they could help them sell honey? This is where he got
the idea of this
startup.
Innovation is necessary to make natural sources popular.
He started this startup
at his home in Kodaikanal by the name of Hoopoe Bird. At first he tried to sell
his product offline, but as demand increased, he also increased his work. He
also connected tribal women to his work, who are now learning to work on
computers and keep accounts. Recently, his team has also been associated with
vendors in Bangalore, so that the packaging and delivery of honey can be easily
done. Working in a town is a challenge in itself, especially in the hilly
areas, but with their hard work and tribals, they have grown their business in
a few years. Priyarshi and Nishita believe that the reason for their success is
the innovations made with their honey and wax. Based on the feedback from
people, she has been doing a lot of experiments with Biwax. Recently, he made a
wrap of cotton in which a layer is kept of Biwax. It is good for storing and
transporting food. Due to such new products, they are continuously moving
forward.
Logistics can be a
challenge, but the biggest advantage of starting in a small city is the cost:
rent and labor are cheaper. Priyarshi says that she spent around Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh to set up operations.
Hoopoe on a Hill currently ships its products to Kodaikanal across India. We
started collaborating with India Post's parcel service. It is perfect for small
city business owners who have smaller scales. It is reliable, reaches the
length and breadth of the country, and is safe, says Priorshi. In the near
future, Hoopoeye on a Hill is looking at large scale operations by employing
more women and adding more products.
