Leaving Studies, Started Working as a Mechanic, Later Became the Owner of Honda Motors
Soichiro Honda was born
on 17 November 1906 in Shizuoka, a
small village in Japan. The father's name was Gihei Honda, a poor blacksmith.
They used to buy old, broken bicycles, fix and sell them. Soichiro was fond of
playing with tools from the beginning. He also used to lend his father's hand.
Honda did not like education. This was the reason that he gave up studies at
the age of 16. Soichiro Honda said goodbye to this world. One
day he saw the offer of a mechanic's job in the newspaper 'Shokai' car company
and moved to Tokyo. He got work, but given his age, only cleanliness work was
given. Soichiro was the youngest employee in that small company.
In 1928,
Soichiro left Shokai Company and returned home. Here he started working as a
mechanic. A few days later he started making cheap and durable piston rings for
big companies. He invested all his capital and opened a company and started
experimenting. Contacted large companies to sell their made
pistons. Soon he got a contract to supply piston rings to 'Toyota'. But
meanwhile during an race, he was injured and was badly injured. He had to stay
in the hospital for three months.
At the hospital, he
came to know that the quality of the piston he manufactured did not pass as per
the prescribed standards. He lost a Toyota contract. Everything was going
against them in life. His entire life was lost. But he did not give up and met
the owners of several companies to improve the piston quality. But
then another tragedy ensued. His factory was completely gutted in the American
B29 attack in 1944 during the Second
World War. This incident shocked him, but after the war ended, he sold the
remains of his company for four hundred and fifty thousand yen and in October 1946 opened 'Honda Technical Research Institute' with the same
money.
Japan's economy was
severely shaken after losing the war. People were forced to walk on foot or
cycle. Seeing these problems, Soichiro built a small engine and connected it to
the bicycle. People liked this concept and the bike started selling. This is
where Soichiro's success began. In 1949, he changed the
name of the company from 'Honda Technical Research Institute' to 'Honda
Motors'. In the same year he launched a two-stroke engine bike. After this, he
did not look back. The company started producing one lakh motorcycles every
month in 1961.
In 1968,
the company's monthly production increased to one million motorcycles. Japan's
economy improved and Honda stepped into the four wheelers. Soichiro also
respected small employees as big officers. After immense successes, Soichiro
Honda bid farewell to this world on 5 August 1991.
